What the ELA measures

Every question is set in real school life: classroom instructions, parent emails and meetings, staff meetings, circulars, lesson plans, student work and report cards, across CBSE, ICSE, State Board, IB and Cambridge schools.

  • 01

    Grammar & sentence structure

Tenses, agreement, articles, conditionals and clause structure you use when explaining.

  • 02

    Vocabulary

Academic, classroom and subject vocabulary, collocations and word forms.

  • 03

    Spelling & mechanics

Spelling and punctuation, as on the board and in report cards.

  • 04

    Pronunciation (receptive)

Word stress, sounds, silent letters and intonation.

  • 05

    Reading comprehension

Circulars, parent emails, textbook passages and policy extracts.

  • 06

    Listening comprehension

Classroom instructions, parent calls, staff meetings and short talks.

  • 07

    Communicative competence

Choosing tactful, appropriate language with students, parents and colleagues.

  • 08

    Coherence & organisation

Ordering ideas, topic sentences and linking words.

  • 09

    Error detection in student work

Spotting and correcting errors, and choosing useful feedback.

A Processing Fluency indicator is also reported, based on how quickly and accurately you work through the questions.

Who it is for

Any registered teacher or education leader. Choose the track that matches your work: about 60% of the questions are common to everyone, and about 40% are set in your track's context.

  3. 3

    Read the guidelines

Read the numbered guidelines and accept the integrity declaration.

  4. 4

    Take the assessment

50 questions in 60 minutes. The questions adapt to your level as you answer.

  5. 5

    Get your result

See your score, CEFR level and skill profile instantly, and download your report and certificate.

60 minutes, visible timer

A few questions also have their own short time limit.

Adaptive

Correct answers lead to harder questions and incorrect answers to easier ones, so the test quickly finds your level. No two candidates get the same set of questions.

Listening

Each recording can be played up to two times. If audio does not work, you can report it and get an extra play.

Formats

Multiple choice, gap fill, spot the error, best response, sentence ordering, matching and audio questions — all answered by tapping or clicking.

How scoring works

Your answers are scored automatically using Item Response Theory, the method used by major adaptive tests. Harder questions answered correctly count for more. You receive:

Important to know

The ELA uses objective questions only. It measures speaking and writing indirectly, through appropriate language choices, organisation, error detection and receptive pronunciation. It does not include a recorded speaking or written task. The ELA is aligned to CEFR descriptors; it is not affiliated with, or equivalent to, IELTS or Cambridge English qualifications.

Integrity and privacy

Before starting, you confirm that you will take the assessment yourself without any unfair means. Every certificate has a unique ID that anyone can check at edustaffindia.com/verify. You control who sees your result and can delete it at any time.
